Words per minute is the simplest way to put a number on reading speed. In schools you will see two versions of it: WPM, which counts every word read, and WCPM (words correct per minute), which counts only the words read correctly. This guide shows how to calculate both, step by step, with examples you can check against our WCPM Calculator.

The words per minute formula

To calculate reading WPM, divide the number of words read by the time taken in minutes:

WPM = words read ÷ minutes

If a student reads 180 words in 2 minutes, the calculation is 180 ÷ 2 = 90 WPM.

What if the time is in seconds?

Most timed readings are shorter than a full minute, or are timed to the second. You have two easy options:

  1. Convert the seconds to minutes first. 45 seconds is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 minutes, so 60 words in 45 seconds is 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80 WPM.
  2. Use the shortcut: WPM = words × 60 ÷ seconds. For the same reading, 60 × 60 ÷ 45 = 80 WPM.

The words correct per minute (WCPM) formula

WPM tells you how fast a student reads, but not how well. A student who rushes through a passage and makes many mistakes can have a high WPM. That is why oral reading fluency assessments use WCPM, which subtracts the errors:

WCPM = (words read − errors) ÷ minutes

For example, a student reads for 1 minute and reaches word 142. The teacher marks 8 errors.

  • Words read: 142
  • Errors: 8
  • Words correct: 142 − 8 = 134
  • Time: 1 minute
  • WCPM = 134 ÷ 1 = 134

When the reading is not exactly one minute, divide the words correct by the time in minutes, or multiply by 60 and divide by the number of seconds.

Words readErrorsTimeWPMWCPM
14281 min142134
9051 min 30 s6056.7

In the second row, WPM is 90 ÷ 1.5 = 60 and WCPM is (90 − 5) ÷ 1.5 = 56.7, which you can round to 57.

What counts as an error?

Standard oral reading fluency scoring counts these as errors:

  • Mispronunciations and substitutions: a different word is said in place of the printed word.
  • Omissions: a word is skipped.
  • Insertions: a word is added that is not in the text.
  • Words supplied by the teacher: if the student pauses for about three seconds, the teacher says the word, and it counts as an error.

Self-corrections made quickly are normally not counted as errors, and neither are differences that come from a student’s accent or dialect. Follow the rules of the assessment your school uses and apply them the same way every time.

Tips for getting a reliable number

  • Use a passage the student has not practiced. A familiar text gives an inflated score.
  • Time it properly. Start the timer when the student says the first word and stop it exactly at the end of the minute, then mark where they stopped.
  • Count words consistently. Decide in advance how to count numbers, hyphenated words, and abbreviations, and keep to it.
  • Do not forget the errors. Reporting WPM when you meant WCPM overstates how well a student reads.
  • Look at more than one reading. Scores vary from day to day and from passage to passage. Some programs take the middle score from three short passages for a steadier result.

How to use the score

A WCPM score is most useful when you compare it with something: the student’s own earlier scores, or grade-level norms for the time of the year. Our oral reading fluency guide shows benchmark tables, and the Reading Age Estimator helps you place a score against grade-level expectations. Track change over time with the Progress Tracker and set targets with the Goal Setter.

Speed is only one part of fluency. Check accuracy with the Reading Accuracy Calculator, score a full running record with the Running Record Calculator, and listen for expression and phrasing with the Prosody Checklist.
